CHANCEY FICTION FOMENTS FREY-LIKE FRACAS AT NAC INQUIRY
Acrimony evocative of the infamous James Frey affair erupted at a National Arts Club event to mark publication of a new French covers edition of John Wareham?s controversial novel, Chancey On Top.

In a series of startling exchanges the illustrious New York institution was rocked by charges that Wareham was guilty of commingling fact and fiction, hijacking the "Haverford Sonnets," and obscenity. John Wareham?s absence from the proceedings due to a plane delay, apparently emboldened his critics. Key moments in the inquiry included:
  • Charges of "literary malfeasance" by eminent psychologist and literary critic, Dr. Brian Sutton Smith.
  • The citing of a "seamy affair with lubricious corporate headhunter" and "a perverted tryst with British Royal" as obscene.
  • Defense of the novel as "a dazzling literary bonbon" by American Civil Liberties Union national chief, Nadine Strossen.
  • Hailing of Wareham's work as "stunning" and the Haverford Sonnets as "finest contemporary showcasing of sonnet form" by Charles DeFanti, professor of literature at Kean University.

John Wareham Statement re NAC Inquiry I am a friend of free speech and therefore welcome the spirited discussion of my novel at the recent inquiry at the National Arts Club. I want to put on record, however, that I have neither misappropriated the work of Elan Haverford, nor attempted to pass her sonnets off as my own. I see no need to defend myself of such allegations. I created every aspect of this novel, and stand by everything I have written.

Publisher's note re Haverford Sonnets In response to many inquiries we wish to confirm that to our knowledge the full selection of the sonnets of Elan Haverford appears in Chancey On Top, and that these poems have never been anthologized elsewhere. Any person who knows of other works by Elan Haverford is invited to submit same to Welcome Rain Publishers who will arrange academic evaluation and validation of same.
